A survey aiming to provide an overview of the current use of telematics applications in European cities and regions has recently been launched. The work is undertaken within the framework of the European Digital Cities (EDC) project supported within the EU's Telematics Applications programme, and is supported by various networks of European local and regional authorities such as Eurocities, Telecities, POLIS (Promoting Operational Links with Integrated Services) and Car-Free Cities.

The aim of the EDC project is to provide an open cooperation network for concerted urban development through telematics applications. The survey is divided into two parts, one covering all the urban telematics applications sectors (Cross-sectoral questionnaire) and the other dedicated to transport telematics (Transport questionnaire). The survey would collect the views of decision-makers on the benefits of telematics applications and on the current barriers to their deployment. It intends to identify priorities and needs for future research and demonstration activities at a European level.
