A total of twelve pilot projects have been launched between 1994 and 1997 under the Commission's Commerce 2000 initiative. This aimed to promote links between SMEs in the commerce and distribution sectors, through the implementation of modern management methods and new technologies, and to encourage the creation and reinforcement of horizontal and vertical collaboration between companies, particularly SMEs, and potential economic partners (e.g. suppliers, related industries, etc.). The Commission is now seeking an organisation to evaluate the pilot projects, each of which has either already been completed or will be by mid-1999, and to put forward proposals for using the results of the projects. The report should be delivered within six months.
