In an effort to reduce emissions of SO2 and NOx from ships, the European Commission, DG XI, has published an invitation to tender for a study assessing the economic, legal, environmental and practical implications of an EU system to reduce emissions. The study would investigate two potential European Union instruments to reduce these emissions. The instruments to be investigated are: - Environmentally differentiated shipping dues, in particular port dues; - Regulated sulphur content in marine bunker fuel. Sea areas in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Irish Sea, the Mediterranean and the north-east Atlantic should be investigated within the study. The study should be completed within ten months.
