A report describing the first European Tracer Experiment project (ETEX) tracer release, carried out on 24 October 1994, has recently been issued. The project, sponsored by the European Commission, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), aimed to produce more reliable data to validate atmospheric transport models. The ETEX project takes place in the light of the fact that industrial accidents can lead to the release of large quantities of harmful material into the atmosphere which can have consequences over very wide areas.

The report summarises the first two phases of ETEX tracer release, while the statistical evaluation of model results, which was performed by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), is described in detail. Ground level concentrations obtained at more than 150 stations for a period of 60 hours from the beginning of the release were compared with the same results from real-time long-range dispersion models. A total of 24 different organisations, using 28 models, processed various information on the forecast synoptic patterns over Europe in the two and a half days following the release, in order to run their long-range dispersion models.

The report includes a short description of the long-range transport models used by participants and a list of their main features and a description of the statistical analysis applied, together with the effects of some of the underlying assumptions. One chapter is devoted to the preliminary phase of the dry runs and another describes the experimental layout, the weather situation during the release, the measured cloud evolution and the aircraft measurements. The modelling phase of the experiment is also summarised and the main part of the report is concerned with the description of the results of inter-comparison.
