A three-day conference on "New techniques and technologies for statistics" (Bonn, February 1992) explored ways in which statistical science and the practices of official statistics have evolved in recent years under the impact of computers, GIS technology, knowledge based systems and new telecommunications facilities. Attended by over 250 persons from 22 countries, the conference helped identify the areas where important process can be expected in the years to come, and where developments should be encouraged. It also provided a forum for decision makers, researchers, official statisticians, national and international organizations involved in programmes of R&D in statistics, and users interested in new techniques and technologies for statistics to discuss problems (including descriptions of user needs), recent solutions, strategies and political issues. The conference was organized by the Statistical Office of the European Communities (EUROSTAT) and the Gesellschaft fur Mathematic und Datenverarbeitung (GMD) and sponsored by the under the Second Framework Programme by the specific programme of statistical expert systems (DOSES), 1989-1992.
