The Institute for Systems, Informatics and Safety (ISIS) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published its annual report for 1997. This summarises the work carried out by the Institute last year which concentrates on the application of emerging technologies for the protection of the individual citizen and of society as a whole. This involved research work on issues such as the safety of introducing genetically modified organisms, the protection of cultural heritage from earthquakes and the safeguarding of nuclear material in Russia.

The primary role of the ISIS is to provide the European Commission and other institutions of the EU with the impartial advice and technical support needed to formulate, implement and monitor Community policies. Each of the research themes are dealt with in a separate chapter in the report and are as follows:

- Dependability of the Information Society;
- Fight against fraud and consumer protection;
- Environmental impact;
- Natural and man-made hazards;
- Preservation of cultural heritage;
- Nuclear safeguards;
- Nuclear research safety;
- Industrial reliability;
- Fusion robotics.

Additional chapters on the staffing structures of the Institute and financial and budgetary matters are provided in separate chapters at the end of the report.
