The proceedings of a conference on clinical pharmacology in psychiatry held in Badajoz, Spain, from 23 to 25 October 1997 have recently been published. The conference was held to discuss the latest developments in research related to dose-effect and in particular research ongoing within the framework of the EU research programme for cooperation in scientific and technical research (COST) on finding the right dose in psychotropic drugs.

The publication collates the plenary lectures, as well as several of the poster presentations of the conference. Examples of the topics covered include:

- Clinical dose prediction on the basis of pre-clinical data;
- Recent dose-effect studies on anti-depressants;
- Role of active metabolites in the assessment of psychotropic drug response;
- Use of surrogate markers in clinical psycho-pharmacology;
- Determination of appropriate dosage in clinical development;
- Inter-ethnic variability in psychotropic drug response.
