The proceedings of a workshop on the genetic and molecular biology of entomopathogenic nematodes have recently been published. The workshop was organised within the framework of the EU programme for cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research (COST) and was held in Antibes, France, in April 1997.

The workshop brought together a total of 51 researchers from the laboratories participating in the COST Action and aimed to provide a focal point for discussions on progress with the research and necessary further investigations in the field. The overall result was to provide a better understanding on molecular techniques used to identify nematodes and to genetically transform them in order to provide substantial improvements.

The publication contains the full texts of the training courses of the workshop as well as the presentations delivered during the scientific sessions. The training courses involved both a demonstration of AFLP techniques and a course on species-specific identification using satellite DNA probes.

A total of 14 presentations are contained in the second half of the report. Examples of the topics covered include:

- The filarial genome project;
- Quantitative Trait Loci mapping in plants;
- Isolation of differently expressed genes from nematodes;
- Genetic improvement of entomopathogenic nematodes;
- The use of mutagenesis for strain improvement in entomopathogenic nematodes.
