The proceedings of a workshop held in Rome, Italy, on 21 and 22 November 1996, within the framework of COST Action C4 have recently been published. The Action is supported within the COST scheme for the promotion of cooperation in scientific and technical research, and examines the analysis and improvement of the general management process of the urban project. The project specifically intends to specify a computer integration platform for sharing and transferring information among the various actors involved in the course of the development of an urban project. The workshop had several aims which included: - To give an overall picture of the complexity of information flows and systems dealing with urban civil engineering (UCE) problems; - To present examples of practical solutions for the management of information systems in UCE; - To discuss examples of information applications developed for various UCE problems in local conditions; - To provide the opportunity for information dissemination of research results and other experiences and to learn from good practice in UCE; - To organise and accelerate further research work within the countries participating in the project. The publication provides an overview of the outcomes of the workshop and the texts of the papers presented under the following headings: - Urban space and planning process; - Geometrical and spatial information management; - Metadata and information transfer; - Urban modelling; - Information systems for urban environmental monitoring and design; - Applications in urban planning and management.
