Promoting scientific and technical cooperation with India

The European Commission, DG IB, is currently inviting the submission of applications for participation in two restricted invitations to tender for the stimulation of joint research and development activities with India.

The first study will involve the collection and evaluation of data on the degradation and over-exploitation of coastal ecosystems in India. In particular the study will exploit the potential of integrated environmental information systems and their components, such as simulation models, geographic information systems (GIS), multi-criteria decision analysis, socio-economic impact on densely populated areas, and sustainability.

The aim of the preparatory collection of data is to use it to predict and evaluate the magnitude and significance of human activities on the aquatic ecosystem of the coastal zone. Interdisciplinary research activities aim, through an intensive study of a representative sample of locations, at identifying the key variables affecting the use of coastal resources, the policy options, and the information and training requirements associated with decision-making instruments necessary for effective management.

The second study to be carried out will involve the definition of an integrated system for the proper use of bio-energy technologies to satisfy the needs of a village. This would require knowledge in areas such as small bio-energy complexes, mathematical modelling, economic analyses, education and vocational training, and energy policy and investment in India and Europe.

The successful contractors will provide specialists who will work jointly with Indian staff to execute joint analysis on the data collected, as well as to disseminate the research findings.
