An overview of progress under the EU's specific research and training programme in the field of nuclear fission safety and safeguards (NFS II) during 1997 has recently been published. The report covers progress made in a total of 106 multi-partner research projects in the fields of reactor safety and innovative approaches, radioactive waste management and disposal, and decommissioning of nuclear installations.

Each volume presents an introduction and a summary of the work carried out during 1997, by project cluster, prepared by the Commission. The contractors also present detailed progress reports for each project, provide information on the research objectives, the work programme, and a synopsis of progress and results achieved. The report also includes contact details for each of the project coordinators.

The following topics are covered in detail in the report:

- Conceptual reactor safety features;
- In-vessel core degradation and coolability;
- Ex-vessel corium behaviour and coolability;
- Source term;
- Containment performance and energetic containment threats;
- Supporting activities including benchmarking activities and algorithm support;
- Fuel cycle concepts;
- Safety aspects of waste disposal;
- Underground research laboratories;
- Research on basic phenomena;
- Decommissioning of nuclear installations.
