The European Label for innovative projects in language learning is now available. This forms part of the implementation strategy for the objective laid down in the Commission's White Paper of 1995 on "Teaching and learning: towards the learning society", which aims to help all EU citizens be proficient in three European languages.

The project is supported within the LINGUA element of the EU's SOCRATES programme for cooperation in education and by the LEONARDO DA VINCI programme for cooperation in vocational training. The overall aim is to stimulate interest in language learning by highlighting innovative language learning at all stages of education and training.

The Label will be coordinated by the European Commission, but managed on a decentralised basis in Member States. It will be awarded every year to the most innovative language learning projects in each country participating in the scheme. The initiatives will be judged on the following criteria:

- They should be comprehensive, ensuring the needs of the learner are identified and met;
- They should provide added value in their national context;
- Initiatives should provide motivation for learners and/or teachers;
- They should be original and creative and have a European dimension;
- They should also include innovation which is transferable to other project in different countries.
