Two publications providing overviews of research, carried out within the EU's specific RTD programme for Biomedicine and Health (BIOMED), in the fields of cancer research and human genome analysis have recently been published. The first book, entitled "Cancer research supported under BIOMED I", provides an overview of the research carried out and describes the approaches, the methodology and results, as well as the impact of the research and the impressions of the researchers of working in a European environment to attain their goals. The book is divided into four sections: clinical trials and therapy, basic research, clinical research and epidemiology. The sections represent the gradual change in emphasis from basic research to a better balance between basic and clinical research. The second publication gives an overview of research into human genome analysis supported under BIOMED I. The final reports of a total of 41 projects are included in the book, covering also the resource centres and single chromosome workshops which took place. Five main areas were addressed within the research carried out: genetic mapping, physical mapping, DNA sequencing, data handling and data bases, as well as technology development and applications. The overall conclusion shows that specific and targeted support has had a very visible impact on human genome research at the European level.
