A total of 1158 proposals were received in response to calls published in Official Journal No C 333 of 24.12.1991 concerning the specific programme of research and technological development in the field of industrial and materials technologies, 1990-1994 (BRITE/EURAM II). Some 77% of the proposals were related to industrial research, 22.5% concerned focused fundamental research, while 0.5% put forward concerted action projects. After evaluation, 238 projects were chose to receive Community funding, amounting to a total sum of ECU 240 million, and contract terms are being finalized. A definitive list of the selected projects, classified by research area, is now available. A second call for proposals is planned for October 1992, with information and proposers days to take place in the following months. The deadline for receipt of proposals is expected to be 26 February 1993. Building on the BRITE/EURAM I and the raw materials-recycling programmes, BRITE/EURAM II aims to strengthen the scientific base of European manufacturing industry. RTD effort is directed towards integration of all aspects of the life cycle of materials and products, taking account of the more severe constraints as regards acceptability of technological developments (environment, work conditions, adaptation of the workforce to technological change, and new methods of management and organization). Objectives and research tasks described in the work programme include: - Materials/raw materials (raw materials; recycling; structural materials; functional materials for magnetic, superconducting, optical, electrical and biomaterial applications; mass commodity materials); - Design and manufacturing (design of products and processes; manufacturing; engineering and management strategies for the whole product life cycle); - Aeronautics (environment related technologies; technologies of aircraft operation; aerodynamics and aerothermics; aeronautical structures; avionic system technologies; mechanical, utility and actuation technologies); - Targeted research actions (environmentally friendly technologies; flexible and clean manufacturing).
