The European Community is committed to widening its activities to promote eastern European science as a full partner in Europe's scientific progress. To that end, a specific action was launched in 1992 with a budget of ECU 40 million to promote scientific and technological cooperation between the Community and central and eastern Europe. The Community has also opened up a number of programmes to support this endeavour under the Third Framework Programme for research and technological development (1991-1994). These make available six research areas, in particular relating to the specific programmes for environment, biomedical and health research, non-nuclear energies, nuclear fission safety, human capital and mobility, and biotechnology. In addition, the central European countries of Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary have recently joined the COST programme for European cooperation in the field of scientific research. COST, which coordinates national research projects administered by an international management committee, now involves 23 countries. A brochure introducing the special action for 1992 as well as collaboration in research projects, other Community programmes (PHARE, TEMPUS) and COST, is available in the English, French, German, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian and Bulgarian languages.
