The European Commission, DG XII, has recently published a report entitled, "FRESHWATER: A Challenge for Research and Innovation, A Concerted European Response". The report is based on discussions and information gathering exercises carried out within the framework of the Task Force "Environment Water", which was set up by the European Commission in 1996 to:

- Define water-research priorities;
- Reinforce coordination between research institutions;
- Stimulate a favourable climate for innovation.

The report summarises the priority areas and action plan for future policy in freshwater research and development and outlines ten priority action lines in this field. These are:

- Action Line 1: Water resources assessment and surveillance;
- Action Line 2: Water resource management at the local/regional level;
- Action Line 3: Pollution sources, pathways and impacts;
- Action Line 4: Water and wastewater treatment;
- Action Line 5: Urban water systems;
- Action Line 6: Water in agriculture;
- action Line 7: Water conservation in industry;
- Action Line 8: The socio-economic framework;
- Action Line 9: International cooperation;
- Action Line 10: Promotion of water research.
