Suggestions for future directions in environmental research are contained in a new report entitled The Socioeconomic Aspects of Environmental Change published recently by the European Commission. The recommendations range from linking EU environmental groups to third world developmental charities, poverty lobbies and constitutional reform organisations, to analyses of the environmental issues resulting from the globalisation of economics.

Produced by DG XII, the report contains summaries of the results of research projects in the field financed by the Commission.

The report is organised around the structure of the current European Community programme of policy and action in relation to the environment and sustainable development. It sets out the five target sectors - industry, energy, transport, agriculture and tourism - which have been selected as priority areas for future research.

The publication is divided into the following sections:

- Improving the basis for the integration of environmental considerations into sectorial policies;
- Socio-economic aspects of priority environmental issues;
- Broadening the range of policy instruments;
- Formulation and implementation of international environmental agreements;
- The actors and sustainable development: attitudes, behaviour and shared responsibility.
