The Cost Transport Secretariat, located within DG VII for Transport of the European Commission, has recently published its final report of the action COST 330, concerned Teleinformatics Links between Ports and their Partners.

From October 1995 to April 1998, 16 European countries took part in COST 330 Action with the aim to review and assess the systems for interconnecting ports and their partners using various modes of communication, such as phones, fax, electronic mail, etc.

A survey was conducted throughout Europe to gather the data needed to describe the operation of the ports. The aim was to derive exemplars and thus improve European maritime freight transport operation within the global logistic system through the exchange and dissemination of findings found in the course of COST 330.

This final report includes recommendation covering the following areas:

- Harmonisation of the working routines;
- Port Community Telematics;
- Training in the use of Port Community Telematics;
- A real standard for data content;
- Inland waterway ports: developing their role in European logistics;
- Harmonisation of legal rules and instruments for Electronic Commerce.
