The European Commission's Joint Research Centre has launched a programme of seminars leading to a Certificate in Entrepreneurship, the pilot of which started last month at its site in Ispra, Italy.

The training programme provides participants with a conceptual understanding of the basics of business administration and with management skills relevant to planning, starting up and running a new venture. One of the essential tools in planning a venture is a business plan, the writing and validation of which the JRC seminar programme tackles specifically.

The course is particularly for young researchers on short-term contracts.

Experts come from centres of excellence in entrepreneurship training across Europe to give the classes. The seminar programme comprises 200 hours of training over a six-month period with a curriculum of 18 modules, which focus on practical topics, such as project management, patenting and licensing, presentation skills, accounting, marketing, legal issues and negotiation.

There are 20 JRC staff on the pilot programme, in which they are participating on top of their full-time employment.
