A website which provides information on the Internal Market Gas Directive and its implementation in Member States is now live on-line at the website of the European Commission, Directorate General XVII.

The Directive (98/30), which aimed to reduce natural gas prices throughout Europe, is hailed by the Commission as the first major step towards creating an open and competitive European gas market. As from August 2000, all Member States must open up at least 20% of their natural gas markets to free competition. At the same time, electricity producers and some industrial consumers will be able to choose their gas supplier.

The website acts as a gateway to further information on the single market for natural gas, with links to an explanatory memorandum, the harmonisation report and documentation for the Directive.
