Commission wants to give grants for transport

The European Commission, DG VII, has published an invitation to call for proposals with a view to giving grants in the field of transport. The call is part of the action programme in the field of transport for 1995 to 2000 seeking to promote transport safety and sustainable mobility.

The Commission is planning to co-finance projects meeting objectives such as promoting safety, expanding its knowledge in all transport sectors or drawing up European standards by standardisation bodies.

These objectives should be applied in the following fields of action:

- Collection and dissemination of information and good practice;
- Measures aimed at avoiding accidents or mitigating their effects;
- Improving the safety of infrastructures;
- The organisation by professional bodies and intergovernmental organisations of actions concerning the operation of the transport market, safety, working conditions and environmental protection;
- Support at European or international level for intergovernmental organisations drawing up technical specifications;
-Cooperation with international organisations working in the field of transport;
- Training;
- Examination and assessment of existing or proposed measures;
- Information and publicity campaigns;
- Pilot and demonstration projects;
- Setting up of networks.

The Commission is hoping to achieve the following results:

- Improved cooperation between the European Commission and the Member States and between the Member States themselves;
- Improved cooperation between the European Union on the one hand and third countries and international organisations on the other;
- Exploitation of the results for the preparation of Commission proposals and communications;
- Dissemination of good practice.

At least once every three months, the Commission will carry out an evaluation of the proposals received and will inform the parties involved of the decisions taken with regard to their proposals.
