On the 1st of January 2014 the European Integrated Research Project "CHEETAH" was launched. CHEETAH (FP7-Energy-2013- Grant no. 609788) is a combined collaborative project (CP) and coordination and support action (CSA) funded under the European Commission’s 7th Framework programme. CHEETAH aims to solve specific R&D issues in the EERA-PV Joint Research Program and to overcome fragmentation of European PV R&D and intensify the collaboration between R&D providers and industry to accelerate the industrialization of innovations.

With 34 partners and 16 nationalities represented in the consortium, CHEETAH's ambition is to develop technology and foster innovative manufacturing capabilities and photovoltaic products so that Europe can develop its technological and industrial capacity of the whole value chain. With a total budget of 13.2 M€ and an EU funding of 9.6 M€, the project was kicked off earlier this year in Amsterdam, on the 6th &7th of February, 2014 and will run until 31/12/2017 (4 years duration). CHEETAH will be coordinated by ECN Solar Energy from the Netherlands.

The CHEETAH project is directly linked to the EERA-PV Joint Research Program, which aims to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of PV R&D in Europe through alignment and joint programming of R&D of its member institutes, and to contribute to the R&D-needs of the Solar Europe Industry Initiative (SEII). Most of the EERA-PV members and associates are represented in CHEETAH.

The CHEETAH’s objectives are threefold:
1. Developing new concepts and technologies for wafer-based crystalline silicon PV (modules with ultra-thin cells), thin-film PV (advanced light management) and organic PV (very low-cost barriers), resulting in (strongly) reduced cost of materials and increased module performance
2. Fostering long-term European cooperation in the PV R&D sector, by organizing workshops, training of researchers, and stimulating efficient use of infrastructure;
3. Accelerating the implementation of innovative technologies in the PV industry, by a strong involvement of EPIA and KIC InnoEnergy in the program.
It is the ambition of CHEETAH to develop technology and foster manufacturing capabilities in Crystalline Si and thin film PV so that Europe can regain and build up own manufacturing capacity in all the segments of the value chain in due time.
