The European Union-India Economic Cross-Cultural Programme expects its Second Call for Proposals to be launched in the first semester of 1999 in the Official Journal of the European Communities, the Programme website and the Indian press.

In the meantime, the Programme has available a leaflet on the Second Call for Proposals, in which both India and the European Union confirm their commitment to better understanding and awareness of each other in order to promote trade and stronger economic relations. There is a shared belief that healthy economic co-operation is a guarantor of increasing prosperity and improvements in the quality of life of all citizens. It will also reinforce conditions for democracy, wider opportunities for individuals, and peace and stability.

The Programme aims to facilitate networking between institutions and organisations in India and in the European Union in three key areas of society - within universities, among media and between enterprises.

In its first phase, the Programme sparked interest from all sections of society throughout India and Europe. Out of 407 submitted applications, 29 project applications were selected for co-financing; these numbers considerably exceeded expectations. It is clear that the second phase of the Programme will provoke an even larger response.

The Programme is a catalyst for partnership and co-operation. The objective is to produce a dramatic increase in contacts, more direct communication and better understanding between Europe and India. In doing so, the results will enhance and enrich the lives of people and groups across all sectors of society.

The Programme focuses specifically on three domains: university; media; and, enterprises.
