The European Commission's Mediterranean Targeted project, MATER - involving 14 countries and 70 institutions - is attracting a great deal of equally international media attention, including a one-hour television documentary, screened last December (1998) by Sept-ARTE TV for its "Human Adventure" series. MATER has made it possible to construct sophisticated models of water circulation, which integrate ecological processes specific to the Mediterranean ecosystem. The EC hopes these will lead to the development of valuable tools, both for managing the coastal zone and for forecasting the impact of climatic change on the Mediterranean Sea. Now, to make the research more visible and to give feedback to citizens, as well as to encourage further press coverage and respond to a demand for information, the project organisers have compiled a folder of the international press coverage the project has received. The folder is available on request for local authorities in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
