The wastewater treatment challenge resembles a double-sided coin. On the one hand, while over 30 years of drinking water policy have tried to ensure that quality is top notch and that consumers are well-informed, growing usage and climate change are putting the precious resource under increased pressure. Furthermore, the very nature of this usage poses considerable challenges: In Europe, industry accounts for about 40 % of water abstraction, be it for cooling or washing purposes, and only 60 % of this water receives treatment before being disposed of into the environment.

EU researchers have been busy developing new technologies that would enable wastewater plants, water-intensive industry to step up their game. Some of these technologies are presented in this magazine. Improved water quality assessment, novel testing methods for emerging pollutants, redesigned treatment systems and pollutant recycling are just a few of the exciting research discoveries discussed in this edition of the research*eu results magazine. Last but not least, this month’s ‘special feature’ introduces our first-ever coverage of a recently completed Horizon 2020 project, whose ground-breaking technology promises to bring electricity, clean water and internet connectivity to the poorest and most isolated regions of the world.

Other topics in this edition include the following highlights:

- Mimicking the body on a chip for new drug testing
- Targeted education proved to reduce cannabis use rates
- Solar cells: on the road to a technological revolution
- Minimizing the effects of climate change on drylands
- Robot swarms use collective cognition to perform tasks
- A step forward in properly fitted fashionable footwear
- Conflicted consumers: anxiety and food decisions

The research*eu results magazine is the main source of information for all findings related to EU-funded science projects. It covers a large spectrum of topics including biology and medicine, environment, energy, transport, ICT, industrial technologies, social sciences and space. It is published 10 times per year in English.
