Consumers' health interests should be protected unconditionally was the key message from Emma Bonino, European Commissioner for Consumer Policy, celebrating the first European Consumer Day at a European Economic and Social Committee conference in Brussels on 15 March 1999. She also stressed that consumer questions should become a driving force in the further development of the Information Society, which should not develop into a "new platform without law". A minimum of legislation should be guaranteed in order to protect consumers' interests, she said. Mrs Bonino also announced that she would be available for an interactive Internet chat with consumers on Wednesday, 24 March between 6.00pm and 8.00pm. The chatline is accessible at: URL: http://europa.eu.int/chatbonino Questions can also be sent there in advance.
