The results from research on economic instruments for nitrogen control in European agriculture will be valuable for formulating future policy in this area, said researchers at a conference, held in Brussels on 22 March 1999.

Organised by the six European research institutes working together on a project funded by the European Commission (EC) Directorate-General XII, the event brought together 109 participants from 19 different European countries. They represented a broad range of organisations, including the fertiliser industry, agricultural producers, public authorities, research communities, non-governmental environmental organisations and the EC Directorate-Generals III, XI and XII.

The final results of the project "Economic instruments for nitrogen control in European agriculture" were presented and discussed. The participants debated the conclusions suggested by the project researchers and discussed the implications this information could have for agricultural and fiscal policies at both European and national levels.

The participants agreed that, despite differing in their opinions and standpoints, the results of this research would be extremely useful for European policy-making.
