The European Commission, Directorate-General XII, has published a report on the implementation of the ELOISE (European Land-Ocean Interaction Studies) project. The report summarizes the first phase of the project. The Thematic Network ELOISE is an action where coastal zone research projects in the Commission are combined, with additional support, to focus on the important questions of how the land-ocean interaction operates and on how this is influenced by human activities. Launched under the Fourth Framework Programme as an initiative of the ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE and the MAST research programmes, ELOISE will continue under the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5), in the thematic programme "Energy, environment and sustainable development". The report describes the planning and execution of ELOISE since its inception in 1994, including its objectives, management and organisation as well as its content. The document also describes the efforts made within the European Commission to facilitate coordination between the projects and with similar activities underway at national and at international levels.
