A selection of final reports from the European Commission's APAS RENA Programme, 1994, for renewable energies, demonstrates the diversity of the work undertaken.

In 1994, the European Commission (EC) allocated ECU 25 million to research projects with the aim of integrating renewable energies in economy and society. The initiative, run in accordance with the EC's "Actions de Préparation, d'Accompagnement et de Support" and called APAS RENA, was also intended to provide a bridge between the renewable energy activities of the European Union's (EU) Third and Fourth Framework Programmes (FP5) for Research, Technological development and Demonstration.

This selection of final reports includes studies carried out under the six research areas covered by the programme:

- European wide integration;
- Local and regional integration;
- Renewable energy sources (RESs) for the Mediterranean (desalinization);
- Bioelectricity;
- Urban planning maximizing the use of RESs;
- Photovoltaics.

The book provides an executive summary of the full final reports of all projects undertaken within the APAS RENA programme.

The EC is confident that this work has helped stimulate greater access and penetration of renewables into the European energy market.
