DG VII spreads the word about ITS

The European Commission, Directorate-General VII, has issued an open invitation to tender concerning the dissemination of information on intelligent transport systems (ITS).

The work will be within the scope of the European Union's (EU) policies for the development of the trans-European transport network, and more particularly in the field of road telematics.

Over the past few years a lot of money and effort has been invested in the development of intelligent transport systems. These systems have been developed to improve the safety and efficiency of road networks. Various systems exist from local road-side based systems up to complete pan-European services like RDS-TMC. According to the Commission, it is becoming clear that although systems and services are being developed, the real implementation is not running as fast as expected and hoped. One of the main reasons for this, the Commission believes, is a lack of information and knowledge at the end users' level.

The objective of this action is to inform users of the current status and development in the field of ITS (mainly related to the TERN). It should explain to them what they might expect on a short- to medium- term basis. What ITS can and will do for them, what are the benefits, and what will it cost?
