The Council of the European Union has adopted a Decision calling for Member States to designate national reference laboratories to monitor viral and bacterial contamination of bivalve molluscs. The national reference laboratories shall regularly inform the European Commission of their national activities and results.

Each national reference laboratory will be responsible for coordinating the activities of national laboratories, and will assist the competent authority in the Member State to organise a monitoring system for viral and bacteriological contamination of bivalve molluscs. They will also organise regular comparative tests between the various national laboratories responsible for these analyses and disseminate information provided by the Community reference laboratory to the competent authorities and national laboratories responsible for these analyses.

The national reference laboratories will also collaborate with the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science at Weymouth, in the United Kingdom, which has been designated as the Community reference laboratory for monitoring the viral and bacteriological contamination of bivalve molluscs.
