The European Organisation for conformity assessment (EOTC) has announced its endorsement of 11 Agreement Groups which mutually recognise each others' standards and testing certification procedures for products and services around the European Union.

'The EOTC supports its Agreement Groups and stresses the considerable significance of mutual recognition to European Community policies', says the EOTC.

The 11 recognised Agreement Groups involve 237 organisations in 23 countries and have come into existence in response to the market-driven needs of manufacturers and services. The Agreement Groups allow certification and testing results arising in one country to be recognised by foreign members, stimulating free trade.

The EOTC is strongly supportive of the work of these Groups underlining 'typical benefits' such as mutual confidence within the Group; pooled information; enhanced status (by association with the EOTC itself); added value to the conformity assessment market; and recognition of the Group's product in the marketplace.

The mutual recognition agreements will benefit both industry and consumers, says the EOTC, with whose regulations all the Agreement Groups must comply.

The 11 EOTC recognised Agreement Groups are:

- EFSG (The European Fire and Security Group);
- IIEAG (The International Instrumentation Evaluation Agreement Group);
