The European Commission has decide which nature conservation projects will receive funding under the LIFE-Nature programme in 1999. Ninety-four new projects have been selected with a total of 64.8 million euro committed to finance them. This year, the main beneficiaries are non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and public authorities, especially local and regional authorities. The majority of projects aim at conservation of different kinds of habitats. LIFE is the only EU financial instrument to provide aid for the environment throughout the Union and in bordering regions. Its general objective is to contribute to the development and implementation of EU environmental policy, by financing specific environmental actions in three sectors: LIFE-Environment; LIFE-Nature and LIFE-Third countries. The LIFE programme has a budget of 450 million euro for the years 1996 to 1999. Detailed information on the 94 new projects is available via the Commission's LIFE-Nature homepage at: http://europa.eu.int/comm/life/home.htm The projects are presented by country in the national languages, as well as in English and French. The title, aims and contacts for each project are listed on these pages.
