The IPR-Helpdesk, an initiative funded by the EU's Innovation and Participation of SMEs programme, has published a brochure outlining the services it offers and providing case studies of queries handled in its first year.

The IPR-Helpdesk was set up in autumn 1998, and is aimed in particular at participants (and potential participants) in EU-funded research projects who have queries on issues relating to intellectual property rights. The Helpdesk can give general advice and information on IPR issues, and can give specific advice in individual cases. However, it does not replace existing patent and intellectual property services and organisations, such as national patent offices. In such cases the advice given by the Helpdesk will include assistance in contacting the relevant services.

Finally the Helpdesk also has the underlying aim of raising awareness of intellectual property rights and the importance - and opportunities - of ensuring IPR protection.
