In order to implement a public key infrastructure (PKI), the European Commission's Joint Research Centre will issue an invitation to tender for the provision of software and related services. The installation of the PKI server software (including client applications, toolkits and components) and its configuration, integration with existing applications and maintenance would also be required. The PKI is based on the International Telecommunication Union's ITU.X.509 standard. It is expected that an invitation to tender will be published in the third quarter of 1999.
