A forum aiming to bring together organisations and individuals interested in developing the infrastructure for integrated broadcasting and telecommunications services, has been set up by partners in the ACTS-supported MEMO project (multimedia environment for mobiles).

The m4m (multimedia for mobiles) forum seeks to meet the demand for mobile multimedia data services by integrating these available digital broadcasting and telecommunication networks in a cost-effective way. It will concentrate on services, terminals and applications, system specifications and architecture, promotion and regulations.

The m4m network architecture is essentially an overlay network to a digital broadcast network in combination with a wireless communication network such as GSM. It is hoped it will lead to the development of novel systems and services by exploiting the integration of such existing network technologies.

It provides three main services: object broadcasting - a one way transmission of objects; interactive object broadcasting - responding to object broadcasting using the wireless communication network; and personal services - a two way TCP/IP service that can access Internet and intranet services.

The current m4m specification is available on the Internet, and the Forum is open to new members.
