Commission calls for proposals for the Descartes Prize

The European Commission is inviting calls for proposals for distinctions for high-level research work, with a view to launching the Descartes Prize, under the Improving Human Potential programme, part of the EU's Fifth RTD Framework Programme. This award is intended to identify and to give public recognition and visibility to European researchers who have successfully produced outstanding scientific or technological results through European collaborative research.

Individual candidates for the Descartes Prize must be nationals of a Member State or an associated state, or must have lived in the EU for at least the last five years. Legal entities must be established in a Member State or an associated state. As a minimum, proposals must have two mutually independent entities from two different Member States or from a Member State and an associated state. The competition is open to all scientific fields, including social and economic sciences.

The Descartes Prize will be funded as an accompanying measure to the Fifth Framework Programme. From a budget of one million euros the EU will award monetary prizes and/or equivalent recognition to the most deserving participants. The monetary awards will consist of the right for the teams to draw funds for the dissemination of their results or for undertaking further research work and will amount to 50,000 euros, on average, per team associated in the selected project.
