Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission has appointed Stefano Manservisi as Deputy Head of his Cabinet, following the recent appointment of Fabio Colasanti as Director-General for Enterprise. Both positions will be effective from January 2000. Mr Manservisi, a Commission official of Italian nationality, is currently Commissioner Monti's Head of Cabinet. He joined the Commission in 1983 and has worked in various DGs (Agriculture and Development) as well as the Cabinets of former Vice-President Pandolfi and former Commissioner, Vanni d'Archirafi. Following Mr Manservisi's departure, Competition Commissioner Mario Monti has appointed a new Head and Deputy Head of Cabinet. Marc Van Hoof, a Commission official of Belgian nationality, has been promoted from Deputy Head of Cabinet to take the senior position, while Angelo Marcello Cardani, an Italian national, takes the deputy job. Mr Van Hoof previously worked in the Industry Directorate-General (now Enterprise) and in the Cabinet of former Commissioner Karel Van Miert where he was responsible for competition policy in the field of state aid. Mr Cardani is a professor of economics on leave of absence from Bocconi University in Milan. He joined Mr Monti's Cabinet on the latter's arrival at the Commission five years ago, working initially on questions of tax coordination and the elimination of duty free in intra-EU sales. Both positions will also take effect from January 2000.
