The European Commission has recently published a call for proposals for the promotion of energy efficiency in the European Union (2000), under the SAVE II programme (the EU's non-technology energy efficiency programme).

Proposals for the following types of actions are now invited:

- Studies aimed at the implementation and completion of Community-wide measures taken to improve energy efficiency in the following areas: public procurement, energy audits, measures for market transformation, combined heat and power and a limited number of focused studies in the area of buildings, industry and transport;
- Sectoral targeted pilot actions aimed at accelerating energy efficiency investment and/or improving energy use patterns in a number of focused areas in the following domains: transport, information databases, equipment, buildings, industry, demands side management, combined heat and power;
- Measures to foster the exchange of experience aimed at promoting better coordination between international, European Union, national, regional and local activities by appropriate means of information dissemination;
- Actions monitoring energy efficiency progress in the Community and in the Member States;
- Specific actions in favour of the creation of energy management agencies at regional and urban level.

The priorities for each of these actions are outlined in two separate information brochures, which are available, upon request, from the European Commission.
