Demining R&D support for test facilities in mine-affected regions

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre plans to issue an invitation to tender for testing mine-detection systems and identifying explosive contaminated ground. It is expected that the tender will be published in the first quarter of 2000.

The tender will be divided in two lots. The first involves the provision of terrain and targets for testing mine detection systems. The terrain would have similar geological and vegetation conditions to mined areas in a country that was formerly part of Yugoslavia, providing a realistic environment to prove the effectiveness of mine-detection systems. Technical support will be required to lay surrogate mine targets in the area and guard the area to prevent the disturbance of targets. Logistic support will be provided to the test teams who will access the facilities to validate the performance of novel mine-detection systems.

The second lot concerns the study of the use of plants to identify contamination in the soil caused by explosives. The study would be conducted in conjunction with the Joint Research Centre.
