Now available are the proceedings of a 3-4 November 1992 Workshop on the role of information in the economy and society, organized by the Commission of the European Communities within the context of the IMPACT programme.

Developments in the use of information technology are taking place at great speed, with their effect felt throughout the economy and society. In this current situation, the main objectives of the Workshop were to establish a network of institutes in the area of information economics and policy, to put forward recommendations on future activities in these areas, and to make recommendations on EC and national policy.

With the participation of 72 experts from industry, consultancies, government and research institutes from through out the Community, the wide-ranging role of information in the economy and society was examined from a number of angles. Discussion covered the economy, firms and organizations, social, legal and policy dimensions.

A main conclusion was that there is a need for policy-related work at Community level on information and its use within the economy and society. The Workshop also concluded that it is important to look at the information market as a whole including non-electronic information. Established as important areas for further work are the role of information in the productivity and competitiveness of organizations, social aspects of information, and the stimulation of a pan-European legal framework.

The Workshop concluded that an information policy support network within a clear framework should be created.
