Jorma Routti, the Director General of the European Commission's Research Directorate-General, joined key figures from the European IT and R&D industries in welcoming Heikki Kotilainen as the new head of the Eureka Secretariat early in February.

Mr Kotilainen joins Eureka, a European organisation promoting industrial collaborations in the R&D sector, after working for Tekes, the Finish Technology Agency. He will now play a key role in nurturing Eureka's relaunch, already well under way following a strategic review last year.

Speaking at the inauguration, Jorma Routti emphasised the value of collaborative efforts between initiatives such as COST, the Fifth Framework Programme and Eureka, particularly in the context of the Research Commissioner, Phillipe Busquin's recent communication on the European Research Area.

Reinhard Junker, the Eureka High Level Representative from the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research also stressed continuing support of the German chair, which runs until June 2000.

Other guests at the reception included Dr Dirk Frimout, the Belgian astronaut who is now participating in his second project with Eureka, Mr Leif Blomqvist, the Finnish Ambassador to Belgium, and Mr Paul Mehring, former President and CEO of DaimlerChrysler Research and Technology, North America.
