The European Union should contribute a further 5 million euros to research on energy issues, following the European Parliament's approval of an increase in funds for the multiannual framework programmes Altener II and SAVE II, early in February 2000.

The European Union's Altener II energy programme, for the promotion of renewable energy sources (1998 to 2002), is set to receive a further 3 million euros in funds, bringing the programme's total budget up to 77 million euros.

This follows the European Parliament's approval of a conciliation agreement on funding for Altener II on 3 February 2000.

At the same time, the European Parliament also approved the conciliation agreement on the financing of the EU's SAVE II programme (1998-2002), which promotes energy efficiency. An increase of 2 million euros brings the programme's budget up to 66 million euros.
