The winners of the new 'Energy globe awards' were announced at a high profile 'energy gala' in Linz, Austria, early in March. The award - for sustainable energy solutions - was given to outstanding projects and initiatives in the fields of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.

The winners are:

- In the industry category: The French company '3 SUISSES' for a high-profile corporate energy action plan and the Frauscher company from Upper Austria for a new exemplary factory building;
- In the housing category: A renewable energy utilisation in Inner Mongolia, China;
- In the campaigns category: Mexico's Trust Fund for Energy Saving, FIDE, Mexico
- In the public investment category: the Swedish EAES-programme - outstanding environmental investments in the Baltic States, Swedish National Energy Administration;
- A special award was also given for the Children's Village Altmünster, SOS Kinderdorf, Upper Austria.

More than 1,600 guests and about 500 representatives from the media attended the event. It preceded World Sustainable Energy day, in Wels, Austria and the Energiesparmesse - one of the world's largest exhibitions on energy efficiency and renewable sources of energy.

Success stories on the field of housing, commercial sector and public investments, campaigns to promote sustainable energy and important policy initiatives towards sustainability from all over the world were presented.

The organisers from O. Ö. Energiesparverband are now preparing a CD-ROM which will present the whole competition as well as the best 50 projects.

The World Sustainable Energy day conference was supported by the Altener II Programme of the European Commission.
