The Statistical Office of the European Communities (EUROSTAT) will shortly publish, in three volumes, a detailed presentation of the over 200 regions which make up the Member States of the European Community. The regions are presented one by one, in an identical format, via maps, diagrams, statistical tables and textual commentaries. Information on each region includes a general and geographic overview, strengths and weaknesses of the region, the region compared to the Community, an up-to-date thematic map, similar regions, intra-regional imbalances in the region, profiles of all sub-regions, structure and changes in population and training and manpower, the evolution and structure of employment, unemployment, economic structure and gross domestic product, labour cost and household income, a description of the main economic branches, main enterprises, environment. The portrait of the regions is addressed to a large public and will be of interest to: Chambers of Commerce and Industry; decision-makers at national, regional and local levels, universities and schools, institutes for economical, geographical, demographical and sociological research; all those who want to increase their knowledge of Europe and its regions.
