The Community programme for Information Market Policy Actions (IMPACT), which aims to develop the European information services market, has given special attention to electronic publishing during 1993. Recent activities include a stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair, demonstrating selected multimedia projects. IMPACT's strategic information initiatives have provided up to 50% support for a number of projects in the areas of interactive multimedia and geographical information systems. Part-funding for applications of present-day technology has been given to high numbers of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as organizations in the European Community's less favoured regions. Frankfurt Book Fair included this year for the first time a separate area for electronic publishing "Frankfurt goes electronic". Visitors to the Fair, (totalling an impressive 252,000) had the opportunity to view selected IMPACT projects on demonstration in the exhibition area during the entire Book Fair Week. These included: - Operation Gold: An audio-visual database of post-war German history, combined with an interactive spy game involving chases around Berlin. It is targeted at English- or German-speaking adults of 21-30 years. - HYPP (Hypermedia for Plant Protection): Offers information on weeds, plant diseases and pests in six languages on CD-ROM. - HAZARD: An interactive multimedia application on CD-ROM providing training, information and instruction on the theme "Managing Health and Safety at Work". - Edusex: An exploitation of multimedia interactivity to create an educational environment offering frank and accurate information on facts and experiences important to a healthy sex life.
