The Joint Research Centre project MARS (Monitoring Agriculture with Remote Sensing Techniques) is carried out by the JRC's Institute of Remote Sensing Applications at Ispra, Italy. A free newsletter "Tele-Agri News" is distributed occasionally by the project, carrying news and items of interest on the subject of remote sensing in agriculture. The latest edition covers "crop area estimation through area frame sampling based on segments" and describes the results obtained by this area of activity within the MARS project during 1992. The regions in which this kind of estimation is performed are mainly in the EEC, but also in some Central European countries of the former Eastern block, where this sampling procedure is used with the technical help of the MARS project in the framework of Community support programmes.
