The Joint Research Centre's 1992 Reports are now available from the Institute for Systems Engineering and Informatics, the Environment Institute and the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies.

These three Annual Reports, intended to serve as reference documents, describe the scientific and technical achievements of the Institutes in their respective fields:

The Report on the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (40 pages) includes a description of the work of the European Science and Technology Observatory (ESTO), prospective studies undertaken during 1992 (energy, environment, transport, industrial competitivity), and studies carried out under the research fellowship programme.

Activities undertaken during 1992 by the Institute for Systems Engineering and Informatics, as described in the 170-page document, fall into several categories:

- Work carried out in the context of the specific programmes of research and technological development (RTD) within the Third Framework Programme: Reactor safety; safeguards and fissile materials management; industrial hazards; reference methods for non-nuclear energies; reliability of structures; fusion technology and safety; environment; the working environment.

- Exploratory research: High sensitivity interferometric sensors; neural network research; signal detection in information sequences; co-evolution in computer-supported scientific team work.

- Support to Community policies: International cooperation (DG I); industrial policy (DG III); transport policy (DG VII); environmental policy (DG XII); telecommunications, information and industrial innovation policy (DG XIII); energy (DG XVII); support to the Community Statistical Office; support to the Secretariat-General of the Commission of the EC.

- Work for third parties: Non-nuclear energy; environment and industrial risk; computer-aided engineering.

- Associations with other laboratories: Partnerships in collaborative projects; associations; human capital and mobility.

- Participation in EUREKA projects (FORMENTOR).

- Work on special Commission projects (the Euro-Quebec hydro-hydrogen pilot project).

- Activities concerning large installations and services: Corporate informatics services; distributed informatics and communications services; the CAE laboratory; the TELEMAC laboratory; the TESLA laboratory; the general design office; ESTI.

The Environment Institute's 1992 Report (130 pages) includes:

- Support to the Community's specific RTD programmes: Global change; environmental chemicals; the working environment.

- Scientific and technical support to Community policies: Support to DG X.

- Exploratory research: Absolute chemical analysis by laser methods; the laboratory for separation sciences; DNA adducts; aerosol tracer technique for long-range application.

In addition, the Environment Institute has also carried out work for third parties and participated in EUREKA actions.

Each of the three Reports includes an executive summary and introductory section. Chapters relate to each of the work areas. Projects are described individually while the text is supported by colour illustrations (except in the case of the Institute of Prospective Technological Studies), graphs and photographs. A list of JRC publications is appended, as well as information on the meetings and conferences which took place during 1992, a glossary of terms, plus a list of authors.

Two JRC Reports which cover the activities of the Institute of Advanced Materials (Petten) are now also available. Similar Reports on the 1992 actions of the remaining JRC Institutes will be published shortly.
