Around 100 ideas for possible collaboration between researchers from the Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and Romania were put forward at a recent event in Romania. The information day was intended to be an opportunity for representatives from the JRC to inform Romanian researchers of the possibilities for closer collaboration and to discuss how this could be implemented. The proposals for collaboration, suggested by Romanian participants, will now be examined by the JRC. The Commission claims that this is the first time an information event in a candidate country has generated such a large and active response. A further proposal to come out of the event was the establishment of a roundtable involving representatives from the JRC, the Romanian Ministry of Research and 40 directors of major Romanian research organisations. Some 19 Romanians are already participating as partners within JRC project networks, while 14 are working at the JRC on short or medium term contracts. The JRC is very active in assisting the transfer of scientific and technical parts of the EU's acquis communautaire to the candidate countries. The organisation of workshops and advanced training courses, as well as positions for visiting scientists and detached national experts within the JRC, are among the instruments employed by the JRC to bring the research communities in the candidate countries closer to those in the EU.
