Advanced study courses in the field of marine science and technology are part of the training programme developed by the MAST (Marine Science and Technology Programme of the European Community). Their main objectives are to further advanced education in topics at the forefront of scientific and technological development in Europe, and to improve the communication between students and experienced scientists on a European level. A call for proposals for the organization of MAST advanced study courses to take place during 1995 was published in Official Journal No C 251 of 15.9.1993. The call required that submissions should be made by 7 April 1994 at the latest. Further information on the content of the proposals is now available from the programme: Proposals for a course in 1995 should be as detailed as possible to facilitate a selection by an expert panel. No forms need to be filled in at this stage, but the proposal should contain: - The title of the course; - The organizing institution; - The scientist responsible; - A list of suggested speakers; - A short description of the content of the course; - An explanation of the relevance of the topic to European/international science (up to one page); - Location of the course; - Maximum number of participants; - Dates; - Duration; - Budget in ECU. Although organizational and financial details clearly cannot be finalized at this stage, the budget should specify and, where necessary, estimate the amounts for the various categories. Costs eligible for EC support are: Honoraria for speakers; subsistence costs and travel refunds for external speakers; subsistence costs for participating students; rent for course rooms and necessary equipment; consumables, copies and administrative costs. The requested Community contribution shall not exceed ECU 10,000 and must be well in balance with the scope of the course offered. The financial support offered to selected courses has typically been ECU 50,000-60,000.
